I had the good fortune of working with Squirrel Thing Recordings, in Brooklyn, NY on three separate albums— the music of each artist was either lost or unknown, and all three of these albums were lovingly restored by audio geniuses Dan Dzula and David Herman of Squirrel Thing.

Molly Drake was a poet, singer, and piano player, and was the mother of the late great Nick Drake! She is said to be ”the missing link in the Nick Drake story”— and truth be told I prefer her music. Both Molly and her son were born in Rangoon, Burma, and as I worked with Burmese folks on the Thailand-Burma border, and have studied the history of SE Asia and of Burma and Thailand in particular, I felt a special connection to them while working on these images for her.

In the teacup I included a view of the famous Shwedagon Pagoda from a lake in Rangoon (Kandawgyi Lake) which surely they both frequented while living there, as well as other symbolism from her lyrics like a weaver bird and starry tea for my favorite track, Night is My Friend.

You can hear Molly Drake’s music here.
